Matthew Lloyd Architects created a water and solar powered passenger lift for the London Festival of Architecture 2010 in response to the architectural issues of universal access and sustainability. The prototype was installed on the Grade I listed Duke of York Steps in central London, near Trafalgar Square and the Houses of Parliament, for the duration of the Festival. The lift is freestanding and can be assembled on site in half a day. Covered in transparent Perspex panels, the lift’s workings are fully visible: the sight and sound of moving water in this busy urban context delighted the public, as did the calm journey and views of the city.
